The World Salt Symposium has been held periodically since 1962 and represents an international gathering of salt producers, researchers, journalists, business leaders and academics from all regions of the globe. It is the most comprehensive and important meeting on the subject of salt. Over time, the technology for producing salt and the understanding of its uses have developed dramatically. To capture new developments, salt industry leaders and scientists developed international World Salt Symposia. In the field of salt and health, groundbreaking evidence is presented by medical experts and the top researchers in their field. All aspects of salt, its uses and production are presented including the geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and tectonics of salt. The mining papers cover dry mining, geophysics, rock mechanics, solution mining, cavity construction and underground storage. Solar salt production papers embrace the subjects of solar evaporation, thermo-evaporation, seawater desalination and by-products of solar operations. The important areas of water conditioning, winter maintenance and the environment are also included.
Since the very first Symposium in 1962, the Salt Institute, an organization started in 1914 that represents salt producers from around the world, has archived the technical papers for each meeting. This, along with SI’s global repository of research on salt, has been a serious undertaking spanning the decades. This website presents for the first time all of the available technical papers accepted for presentation at each of the World Salt Symposia, made available to the general public in a searchable digital format. It stands as a permanent archive of decades of research into the subject of salt. While the host country may change with each symposium, the Salt Institute has committed to preserving this archive in keeping with its mission to analyze research and public policy, dispel inaccuracies in public knowledge, and foster increased understanding of the life enhancing qualities of salt, while adhering to sound science.
